Like traditional amalgam (metal) fillings, white fillings are placed into a tooth, once the decayed matter has been removed. The difference is, they blend in with your tooth shade.

White fillings are made from composite resin, which has several advantageous characteristics, including:

• They’re unresponsive to temperature changes (therefore they’re less resistant to cracks)
• They’re barely noticeable in your mouth.
• They’re preservative – only a small portion of your natural tooth matter needs to be removed.
• They’re completely metal and mercury-free.

What else can white fillings be used for?

As well as restoring teeth affected by decay, white fillings can make small repairs to the edges of teeth that are worn or slightly chipped. The composite resin can be bonded to the edge of your teeth, in addition to being placed within the hollow of a tooth.

How long do white fillings last?

You can expect a white filling to last for an average of between 7 and 15 years. The exact amount of time will depend on where the filling has been placed in the mouth, how much wear it sustains, and how well you look after your oral health.

Does my amalgam filling need replacing?

Should we discover that your amalgam filling is worn or cracked, we will recommend that you have a replacement filling, so as to ensure the tooth is well protected. If you notice changes like a bad taste in your mouth, floss shredding, colour changes or a new and evolving pain around the tooth that has a filling, we encourage you to make an appointment as early as you can; this could potentially mean your filling needs to be replaced.
